Keidran Jones (born 15 April 1987), better known by his stage name Iyaz, is a British Virgin Islands singer-songwriter and dancer from Tortola, signed with the record label Rekless Music. He is known for his singles “Replay“, “Solo“, “So Big” and “Pretty Girls“. Recently he has released his comeback single “Alive“. Beat-Town had the chance to chat with him for many interesting issues. Enjoy our interview.
Beat-Town: First of all, I would like to thank you for doing this interview with us. Recently, you released your new single “Alive” and at the end of the video clip you are talking about the comeback you are making in your career. Many people tweet about this comeback with the hashtag #IyazIsBack. Would you like to share with us some details regarding your plans in general?
Iyaz: First of all, thank you having me! Basically, I took some time off to be with family, to regroup… find myself again… find my sound again… Now I’m back with the new single and an album on the way. I can’t wait for my fans to hear the new music!
BT: Sean Kingston found you in 2008 through your MySpace account. Are you feeling a little bit lucky that a well-known artist like Sean found you simply by looking through MySpace?
I: Of course I’m grateful. But in life, getting a lucky break isn’t all it takes. You gotta be working hard so that when that opportunity shows itself you are ready for it! So yes I was feeling lucky at the time but I was already putting in the work… so I felt Sean finding me was a reward.
BT: How is your relationship between you and Sean Kingston now?
I: It’s great, same as always, we talk here and there, Caribbean folk stay together!
BT: Your tracks “Replay”, “Solo”, “So Big” and “Pretty Girls” were loved by the Greek audience. Also your debut album “Replay” managed to reach the Top20 in our charts. Have you ever thought of making a live performance in Greece?
I: Iam an entertainer. I love to perform and make people happy. So by this default I would never exclude any performance anywhere. If Greece will have me, I will be there singing my heart out for you!
BT: You have worked with many artists together. Is there any singer or producer that you would love to work with, but you didn’t manage to do it until now?
I: Hmmm great question… lately I’ve been feeling the DJ Mustard vibe… would love to see if I could bring out some island flair in him to make a banger!
BT: How would you describe your sound and your style in general?
I: My music and mission is simple. I want the listener to just plain be happy when they hear my music! That’s all I aim to do… make feel good music. Whatever their mood is before listening to my music, I want their mood to be in a much better place after the song is over. And hopefully they play me again!
BT: In 2010 you participated in the remake of the legendary “We Are The World”, hoping that this song would reach a new generation and help benefit the people of Haiti. How did you feel about taking part in such a movement? Were the rehearsals tiresome?
I: It was such an incredible opportunity on the musical aspect alone. Then on top, to be benefitting a fellow island nation made me feel really great about what I do. Being able to use the talents God gave me for a beneficial cause.. there is nothing that can top that. And the rehearsals were the same anywhere, luckily when you love what you do it never feels like work!
BT: I want to thank you again for this very interesting interview. Any last words for your fans in Greece?
I: Just to stay connected with me on social medias! @Iyazlive. Feel free to talk to me on there and tweet the #IyazIsBack hashtag so you can join me on my comeback! I would love to perform in Greece! Thank you for the interview!
