Elusive 17-year-old Austrian songwriter and producer filous has followed up on his remixes of Porter Robinson and Damien Jurado with a deft rework of German indie duo Milky Chance.
Using the original’s simple guitar line and emotive vocal performance, filous allows the track to shimmer, embellishing Milky Chance’s arrangement without ever overpowering its subtlety. The production itself owes a large amount to house music, with a simple 4/4 beat that instils focus into an already expansive instrumental that weaves between elements of the initial track.
As the song peaks and troughs, it repurposes the original’s ideology – injecting nostalgia, nuance and emotion without ever being in danger of melodrama.
With 2014 seeing Milky Chance enjoy an international #1 with ‘Stolen Dance’ and filous celebrating three consecutive Hype Machine #1s, pushing his streaming numbers way above 10m last year, this reworking of ‘Flashed Junk Mind’ provides a meeting of hotly tipped acts for this year and in turn, an early glimpse into what’s to come from prodigal producer filous.
