Paul Thomas is witnessing one of his best years so far, after releasing the massive collabo track “Shining” together with Alex Di Stefano and touring around the world. The UK based producer and Dj answered our questions while he was relaxing in L.A after his big tour in the US.

Beat-Town: First of all, let me thank you for this interview. On what are you working on these days?
Paul Thomas: Thank you. I’m in LA at the moment, taking a few days off after my North America tour and staying with my friend Funkagenda who has a place here in Beverley Hills. I’ve just signed my new single to his Funk Farm label, and will be recording the vocal here in his studio.

BT: What should we expect from you for the rest of 2012?
Paul T.: Lots of new original music. There are new collaborations on the way with Jerome Isma-Ae, Weekend Heroes, Funkagenda & Kim Fai, M.I.K.E. Push… as well as solo material on Toolroom, Black Hole and Funk Farm, and remixes for Paul van Dyk & Paul Oakenfold.

BT: We heard your last record, the remix of Snow Patrol’s “The Symphony”. Do you prefer to edit songs which belong to a different music genre, over more classic house tunes?
Paul T.: I don’t really think about the genre too much, I just like to do records that I love and I think would fit in my style. The one before was Energy 52 – Café Del Mar, which is one of my favourite all time dance tracks. With ‘The Symphony’, I’d heard the original on the radio while driving my car one day, and it really gave me goosebumps. Even though the original is a much slower tempo, I knew it would work really well on the dance floor in my style.

BT: How did you start producing your own tracks?
Paul T.: Funkagenda taught me an awful lot when we both lived in Birmingham. He used to engineer my first material, and slowly I picked up tip and ideas each time I went in.

BT: What do you consider as your most significant accomplishments till now?
Paul T.: Becoming Godskitchen and GlobalGathering resident DJ was my first accomplishments which gave me a great platform to work from. Remixing some of my icons has been another, such as Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx and Chicane. And the Beatport top 10 success of 10 tracks too.
BT: You have toured around the world and played on really huge festivals. Are there countries you particularly liked and is there a crowd that blew you away while performing?
Paul T.: I love to play in India. The vibe there is really new, and very exciting. Korea have amazing, energetic and enthusiastic crowds. I really like the passion and knowledge of music in Argentina too. And after completing my first tour of North America this week, I will certainly be spending a lot more time here too! With regards to crowds, the first time I did GlobalGathering in Belarus in 2008 I think it was, was just crazy. It was the first outdoor dance festival ever in the country. I’ve never seen a crowd go as mental as they did that night.

BT: Thinking about your tour dates and various radio shows like on BBC Radio 1 playing your tracks, did you imagined all of this happening when you were doing your first steps in music?
Paul T.: Never in a million years. I often think about this when I’m remixing a big artist, like Paul Oakenfold for example. I used to go to see him play at his Cream residency in Liverpool in the late ‘90s. I used to wait in anticipation for him to arrive in the booth and go crazy during his set. Now, over 10 years later, I’m about to remix one of his biggest ever singles. If you’d told me that in the late ‘90s, I would have said you’re crazy!

BT: You have collaborated with several artists like Jerome Isma-ae, Manuel De La Mare, Alex Di Stefano etc. Are there some particular names you always wanted to collaborate with but you did not have chance to till now?
Paul T.: I’d love to do something with more of the iconic dance bands, like Underworld or Chemical Brothers. I’ve always been a huge Eric Prydz fan too.

BT: Is there anyone who you look up as a role model?
Paul T.: There’s certain artists who I admire for sure. I’ve always been a big Sasha fan, and have admired the way he plays his music and can take you from one place to another with the blink of an eye. Every time I’ve heard him he’s been flawless. Funkagenda is someone who I’ve always gone to for advice or for his constructive criticism on my tracks.

BT: Can you describe Paul Thomas the producer and the person Paul Thomas? Can we maybe even discover attributes of your character in your music?
Paul T.: Paul Thomas the producer has gone back to his more melodic roots in the past 18 months or so. I used to find it difficult to find my own niche, making music to fit a label rather than what reflected me as an artist and DJ. That changed after my ‘Tomorrrow’ track with Jerome Isma-Ae. 2 recent tracks which really reflect me are ‘Ruby’, which is coming out on Toolroom. That track was born out of some bad times I was having, and is quite an emotional track. And also my new single ‘Who’s Afraid Of The Dark’, which is coming on Funk Farm. It’s a darker track, in refection to all the fluffy club house stuff that everyone seems to be obsessed with at the moment!

Paul Thomas: Σε ευχαριστώ. Αυτή την στιγμή είμαι στο L.A. στο σπίτι του φίλου μου του Funkagenda που μένει στο Beverly Hills και “ξεκλέβω” μερικές μέρες μετά την ολοκλήρωση της περιοδείας μου στην Αμερική.

BT: Ακούσαμε πρόσφατα το τελευταίο σου remix για το “The Symphony” των Snow Patrol. Προτιμάς να δουλεύεις πάνω σε κομμάτια που ανήκουν σε διαφορετικά είδη μουσικής έναντι των κλασικών house παραγωγών?
Paul T.: Δεν πολυσκέφτομαι το είδος της μουσικής και πολύ, απλά μ’ αρέσει να δημιουργώ κομμάτια που αγαπώ και για τα οποία πιστεύω ότι ταιριάζουν στο στυλ μου. Για παράδειγμα, πριν από αυτό το remix είχα κυκλοφορήσει το Energy 52 – Café Del Mar, ένα από τα πλέον αγαπημένα μου dance κομμάτια. Το αυθεντικό “The Symphony” το άκουσα μια μέρα στο ραδιόφωνο την ώρα που οδηγούσα με το αμάξι μου και κυριολεκτικά ανατρίχιασα. Παρ’ όλο που το αυθεντικό τραγούδι έχει ένα πολύ πιο αργό tempo, ήξερα ότι θα μπορούσε να ταιριάξει πολύ καλά με μία dance floor παραγωγή του στυλ μου.

BT: Πώς ξεκίνησες να δημιουργείς δικά σου κομμάτια?
Paul T.: Ο Funkagenda μου έμαθε πραγματικά πάρα πολλά πράγματα όταν μέναμε και οι δύο στο Birmingham. Συνήθως δούλευε πάνω στα πρώτα μου δείγματα και σιγά σιγά αντλούσα tips και ιδέες κάθε φορά που εκείνος “πείραζε” τα κομμάτια.

BT: Τι θεωρείς ως το πιο μεγάλο σου επίτευγμα?
Paul T.: Όταν έγινα resident Dj στα Becoming Godskitchen και GlobalGathering, αυτά ήταν τα πρώτα σημαντικά επιτεύγματά μου που μου έδωσαν μία εξαιρετική βάση για την συνέχεια. Το να remixάρω επίσημα κομμάτια που ανήκαν στα πρότυπά μου όπως π.χ. Paul van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx, Chicane αλλά και η επιτυχία στα Top 10 του Beatport ήταν επίσης πολύ σημαντικά επιτεύγματα.

BT: Έχεις δει ολόκληρο τον κόσμο μέσω συναυλιών και έχεις παίξει σε τεράστια φεστιβάλ. Υπάρχουν κάποιες συγκεκριμένες χώρες που να σου άρεσαν? Κάποιο συγκεκριμένο κοινό που να σε ενθουσίασε με την παρουσία του?
Paul T.: Λατρεύω να παίζω μουσική στην Ινδία. Το vibe εκεί είναι κάτι το καινούργιο και ιδιαίτερο. Η Κορέα ήταν απίστευτη, γεμάτη ενέργεια και με ένα πολύ ενθουσιώδες κοινό. Μου αρέσει πραγματικά το πάθος και η γνώση πάνω στην μουσική που υπάρχει στην Αργεντινή. Και μετά την ολοκλήρωση της τελευταίας μου περιοδείας εδώ στις Η.Π.Α., θα κανονίσω να περνάω περισσότερο χρόνο εδώ πέρα. Σχετικά με τον κόσμο, νομίζω ότι θα επέλεγα την πρώτη φορά που έκανα το GlobalGathering στην Λευκορωσία του 2008 – ήταν σκέτη τρέλα! Ήταν το πρώτο dance festival σε ανοιχτό χώρο που διοργανώθηκε στην χώρα. Δεν έχω ξαναδεί τέτοια αντίδραση σε κοινό όπως εκείνο το βράδυ.
BT: Όταν σκέφτεσαι όλες τις περιοδείες που ολοκλήρωσες και που ετοιμάζεις, αλλά και τις διάφορες ραδιοφωνικές εκπομπές όπως στο BBC Radio 1 όπου παίζουν τα κομμάτια σου, είχες φανταστεί ότι θα συνέβαιναν όλα αυτά τα πράγματα όταν πρωτοξεκινούσες με την μουσική?
Paul T.: Όύτε στα πιο τρελά μου όνειρα. Αυτό το πράγμα το σκέφτομαι όταν remixάρω τραγούδια μεγάλων καλλιτεχνών, όπως π.χ του Paul Oakenfold. Never in a million years. Θυμάμαι όταν πήγαινα στο τέλος του 90″ στο Liverpool στο Cream όπου ήταν resident για να τον δω ζωντανά και την αναμονή που είχα μέσα μου για να τα “σπάσω” με την μουσική του. Τώρα, μετά από πάνω από δέκα χρόνια, είμαι έτοιμος να remixάρω ένα από τα μεγαλύτερά του singles. Αν μου το έλεγες τότε, την εποχή του 90′, θα σε αποκαλούσα σίγουρα τρελό.

BT: Έχεις συνεργαστεί με αρκετούς καλλιτέχνες, για παράδειγμα με τους Jerome Isma-ae, Manuel De La Mare, Alex Di Stefano κ.α.Υπάρχουν κάποια ονόματα με τα οποία θα ήθελες να συνεργαστείς στο μέλλον?
Paul T.: Θα ήθελα πραγματικά πολύ να κάνω κάτι με τις θρυλικές dance μπάντες, όπως είναι οι Underworld ή οι Chemical Brothers. Επίσης, πάντοτε ήμουν μεγάλος fan του Eric Prydz.

BT: Υπάρχει κάποιος που έχει τον ρόλο του πρότυπου για εσένα?
Paul T.: Βεβαίως, υπάρχουν συγκεκριμένοι καλλιτέχνες που θαυμάζω. Είμαι πολύ μεγάλος fan του Sasha και συγκεκριμένα πάντοτε θαύμαζα τον τρόπο του με τον οποίο έπαιζε την μουσική του. Μπορούσε να σε πάει από το ένα “μέρος” στο άλλο ανά πάσα στιγμή, όσες φορές τον άκουσα ήταν απλά αλάνθαστος. Ο Funkagenda είναι επίσης κάποιος που θα ρωτήσω κατευθείαν για μία συμβουλή ή για να μου δώσει μία πραγματικά κριτική ματιά στα δικά μου κομμάτια.

BT: Μπορείς να μας περιγράψεις τον παραγωγό Paul Thomas και τον άνθρωπο Paul Thomas? Μπορούμε να ανακαλύψουμε πτυχές του χαρακτήρα σου μέσα από την μουσική σου?
Paul T.: Ο παραγωγός Paul Thomas έχει επιστρέψει στις πιο μελωδικές του ρίζες τους τελευταίους 18 μήνες. Είχα πάντοτε δυσκολία να βρω το δικό μου είδος/δρόμο, να δημιουργώ μουσική που θα ταίριαζε περισσότερο στο label παρά σε εμένα, τον καλλιτέχνη και τον Dj Paul Thomas. Αυτό άλλαξε μετά το κομμάτι μου με τον Jerome Isma-Ae, το “Tomorrow”. Δύο κομμάτια που με αντιπροσωπεύουν μ’ έναν ιδιαίτερο τρόπο είναι τα “Ruby” και το “Whos Afraid Of The Dark”. Το πρώτο θα κυκλοφορήσει σύντομα μέσω της Toolroom, ένα τραγούδι που “δημιουργήθηκε” μέσα από μία άσχημη εποχή που πέρασα και είναι αρκετά συναισθηματικό. Το δεύτερο είναι ένα πιο σκοτεινό κομμάτι που αντιπροσωπεύει αυτόν τον club house ήχο που λατρεύεται αυτή την περίοδο από σχεδόν όλους

BT: Είμαι πραγματικά πολύ χαρούμενος που κάναμε αυτή την συνέντευξη Paul. Θες μήπως να προσθέσεις κάποιες τελευταίες κουβέντες για τους αναγνώστες μας?
