Έχοντας μια εμφανή άνοδο τα τελευταία 3 χρόνια στο χώρο του underground hip hop, ο Ismael “Block Mccloud” Diaz κατάφερε να κινήσει το ενδιαφέρον πολλών. Τα feats του σε πολλά αναγνωρίσιμα album από την underground σκηνή καθώς και η παρουσία τους στους Army of the Pharaohs, αλλά και η ασταμάτητη ενασχόληση του με το χώρο του hip hop (και όχι μόνο) ήταν το κλειδί στην επιτυχία του. Έτσι, με αυτήν την συνέντευξη γνωρίσαμε σχεδόν προσωπικά τον Block, αφού τα λόγια αυτά βγήκαν μέσα από την καρδιά του και μας φανερώθηκαν πτυχές του κόσμου του που για εμάς στην Ελλάδα λίγα ήταν γνωστά.

Beat – Town: Πριν αρχίσουμε, μίλα μας λίγο για τον εαυτό σου. Τα τελευταία χρόνια το όνομα σου ακούγεται όλο και πιο συχνά στους κύκλους του χιπ χοπ.
BMc: Το όνομα μου είναι Block McCloud, ιδρυτής του «Brooklyn ACADEMY»,«Suicide Squad» και μέλος των Army of The Pharaohs. Είμαι πολλά χρόνια στο χώρο, αλλά πρόσφατα αποφάσισα να βγω από το παρασκήνιο και να γίνω solo καλλιτέχνης.

BT: Πάνω σε τι δουλεύεις αυτόν τον καιρό;
BMc: Είναι πολλά από ότι μου φαίνεται. Τελειώνω το επόμενο μου full length LP με όνομα «Four Walls» το οποίο αποτελείται εξ ολοκλήρου από παραγωγές του DJ Waxwork , πρώην μέλος των Snowgoons. Θα είναι η καλύτερη δουλειά μου μέχρι σήμερα, ειλικρινά. Οι συμμετοχές περιλαμβάνουν : ILL Bill, Vinnie Paz,Reef The Lost Cauze, King Magnetic, Celph Titled, R.A. The Rugged Man, Demunz the Dark Apostle και άλλους. Επίσης μαζί με το φιλαράκι μου τον Genetics και τον Phil Hamonic κάνουμε ένα αλμπουμ με παραγωγές μας στο οποίο θα συμμετέχουν όλοι οι ανερχόμενοι underground MC’s από όλο τον κόσμο. Με αυτό το άλμπουμ θέλω να τους ευχαριστήσω για όλη την υποστήριξη που μου έδειξαν και έτσι ηχογραφώ αυτό το άλμπουμ για να τους διαφημίσω με τη βοήθεια των beats μας, ας πούμε σαν ένα Lyricist Lounge 2012, ονομάζεται «DNA (Drugs and Alcohol Vol.1)». Επίσης κάνω engineering για τους Method Man, Ghostface και Raekwon, διαχειρίζομαι το studio του Ghost και το δικό μου στο Staten Island.Εν τω μεταξύ ηχογραφώ τρία απίθανα άλμπουμ για τον SonGod (τον γιο του Ghostface Killah), τους SICMIN (που αποτελείται από DR.AMA. , Blakstarr, Hellfire και Night Time) με όνομα «Dark Black Hell Night” και τέλος για ένα νέο group με όνομα «MAD HOUSE» από το Staten Island. Τέλος δουλεύω με τη γυναίκα μου Fresh Jones και το γιο μου Lego The Future, album που θα κλονίσουν την επιτυχία του Drake και της Beyonce(γέλια). BT: Υπάρχει κάποιος rapper ή χιπ χοπ είδωλο που θαυμάζεις;
BMc:Προφανώς οι Wu-Tang είναι στην κορυφή και οι AOTP («Army of the Pharaohs”) είναι πιο κοντά σε αυτά που θέλω να εκφράσω με τη μουσική μου. Τέλος θαυμάζω τον Eminem και τον Big Punisher λόγω της αυθεντικότητας τους και των δυνατών τους στίχων.

BT: Θυμάσαι την πρώτη σου επαφή με τη hip hop μουσική;
BMc: Είμαι κοντά στο να αποκαλύψω την ηλικία μου εδώ (γέλια) αλλά ναι θυμάμαι παρακολουθώντας ειδήσεις στην τηλεόραση για το νέο «φαινόμενο» που λεγόταν hip-hop γινόταν αναφορά για ένα τραγούδι που λεγόταν «The Message» από τον Grand Master Flash, και γινόταν προβολή του video και γινόταν κριτική για το πόσο αληθινοί ήταν οι στίχοι. Αργότερα, άκουσα «Sugarhill Gang» και το «White Lines» και κόλλησα!

BT: Είχες δύσκολες στιγμές κατά τη διάρκεια της καριέρας σου;
BMc: Υπήρξα άστεγος 2 φορές στη ζωή μου με την τελευταία φορά να είναι 4 χρόνια πριν και τότε ήταν η στιγμή που εγώ και η Fresh(σσ . η γυναίκα του) αποφασίσαμε να αλλάξουμε την κατάσταση και να είμαστε μαζί . Αλλά πέρα από τι δυσκολίες και τις ατυχίες στη ζωή μου το hip-hop ήταν πάντα καλό μαζί μου και με βοήθησε να τα ξεπεράσω όλα. Τώρα έχω ένα full εξοπλισμένο studio , label και ένα σωρό επαφές που δεν ξέρω τι να τις κάνω. Μην αναφέρουμε 4 πανέμορφα παιδιά, μια όμορφη γυναίκα και ένα τεράστιο διαμέρισμα στο Staten Island. Αυτός ο αριθμός το 4 ήταν πολύ συμβολικός στη ζωή μου μέχρι τώρα.

ΒΤ: Όντας ένας underground rapper, ένιωσες ποτέ πως οι δουλειές σου δεν έπαιρναν την προσοχή που τους άξιζε;
BMc: Ένιωθα έτσι μέχρι πρόσφατα, είναι απίστευτο και με γεμίζει έμπνευση το πόση αγάπη και υποστήριξη έχω από mc’s όπως τον R.A. (σσ . R.A. The Rugged Man), τον Celph Titled, τον Vinnie και τον Bill (σσ. Vinnie Paz και Ill Bill αντίστοιχα.) Καθώς και την κοινή υποστήριξη που έδειξαν στο να πάρω μέρος σε αυτά τα projects. Πιστεύω πως ως τώρα δεν ήξερα τι επίδραση είχα στο χώρο (του hip-hop) και νιώθω ευχαριστημένος που κατάφερα να φτάσω το στόχο μου, ο οποίος ήταν να αλλάξω το παιχνίδι, να έχω μια επίδραση πάνω του και να με θυμούνται για την μουσική που έκανα. BT: Βλέπεις αλλαγές στο χώρο του hip hop τα τελευταία 3 χρόνια;
BMc: Φίλε ναι, βλέπω αλλαγές… Η μεγαλύτερη αλλαγή είναι ότι κανένας πλέον δεν πουλάει άλμπουμ εκτός από τους γνωστούς Young Money, Roc, και τα R&B. Οι ψηφιακές πωλήσεις θα συνεχίσουν να ευημερούν. Πιστεύω πως οι άνθρωποι θα συνεχίσουν να βρίσκουν παρανόμως τα πάντα, με rips και bootlegs χάρη στον Bush, τον Obama και τους άλλους γαμιόληδες… Ναι, τα πράγματα είναι άσχημα, αλλά δεν μπορώ να παραπονεθώ, γιατί κατάφερα και έγινα καλύτερος ενώ όλοι οι άλλοι βρίσκονται σε συνεχή πτώση.

BT: Ποιες είναι κατά τη γνώμη σου οι καλύτερες μπάρες που έχεις γράψει;
BMc: Δε μπορώ να πω ρε φίλε… Είναι όλα τα μωρά μου και έτσι. Αλλά από το επερχόμενο ‘4 Walls’, έκανα ένα τραγούδι με όνομα «Last Will» με τη γυναίκα μου όπου έγραψα:
«I write like Ι may not have the chance to write again,
I live like I may not find romance or find a friend,
Cause like my niggah War said any day your life can end
So I struggle to make peace with myself what I strive to mend
Is me, that’s where my focus is at cause I notice that
Sometimes the ties that bind can also hold us back…
So I sever the ties and cut the strings that connect us
And look to the heavenly skies for wings to protect us…
And until God collect us, I do what I must… I move but don’t rush, i speak truth but I don’t trust!
And I take everything that I hear with a grain a salt,

BT: Νιώθεις υπερήφανος που είσαι μέλος των Army of the Pharaohs, ένα γκρουπ στο οποίο μέλη είναι οι πιο δημοφιλείς underground rappers στις Η.Π.Α.?
BMc: Ναι, σίγουρα νιώθω περήφανος που είμαι μέλος αυτής της «οντότητας». Δούλευα με τον Vinnie (σσ. Vinnie Paz) για χρόνια και έτσι ένιωθα ότι αδικούμουν αλλά σίγουρα μια πολύ ωραία μέρα όταν το ανακοίνωσε επίσημα στον κόσμο. Θαυμάζω το όλο κίνημα, το πώς κινούνται σαν ένα, και είμαι χαρούμενος που συνεισέφερα σε όλες τους τις επιτυχίες…. Καθώς και το πώς συνεισέφεραν και αυτοί στις δικές μου… Νιώθω τιμημένος…

BT: Υπάρχουν κάποιοι rappers ή παραγωγοί που θέλεις να δουλέψεις μαζί στο μέλλον;
BMc: Κοιτώντας μπροστά στο μέλλον θα ήθελα να γυρίσω πίσω… Δηλαδή να συνεργαστώ με Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim… θέλω να δουλέψω πάνω σε περισσότερα με τον Marco Polo και τον ILL Mind. Άνθρωποι με τους οποίους πρόκειται να συνεργαστώ στους επόμενους μήνες είναι B real, Tech Nine, Immortal Technique, M1, Inspectah Deck, Gizer, σκοπεύω να μείνω απασχολημένος όπως βλέπετε (γέλια) .

BT: Ποιος είναι ο αγαπημένος σου ‘mainstream» rapper;
BMc: Μπορεί να χάσω μερικούς fans τώρα αλλά μου αρέσει το όλο Young Money κίνημα. Ο Drake είναι φοβερός με το rapping και το τραγούδι, και αν και η αγορά έχει αρχίσει να κορέζεται από τη δουλειά του, η προσέγγιση του είναι διαφορετική από αυτά που «μας τάιζαν» τα τελευταία 5 χρόνια και αυτό είναι αναζωογονητικό. Η βιομηχανία (της μουσικής) πρέπει να κάνει αυτό το πράγμα συχνότερα, ή και να το αλλάξει άμεσα, κουράστηκα από το «αδιάφορο» rap. Χρειαζόμαστε ουσία στη ζωή μας και αυτό είναι που εγώ και οι άνθρωποι μου φέρνουμε…

BT: Η άποψη σου για την «εισβολή» του autotune και του electrohop στην hip hop κουλτούρα;
BMc: Το αγαπάω, δε βλέπω λόγο γιατί οι “underground» πιτσιρικάδες κολλάνε σε αυτό το hater hype, συνδέουν ένα εφέ με το “mainstream” και ξαφνικά θεωρείται λάθος να το χρησιμοποιείς ή σημαίνει ότι ξεπουλάς. Αν κοιτάξουμε πίσω στην Funk εποχή, George CLinton, Bootsy Collins, μετά αργότερα με τους Black Street και ακόμα και ο Prince, αυτοί το χρησιμοποιούσαν πολύ πριν τον T-Pain. Ο T-Pain το ξανάκανε δημοφιλές και πραγματικά μπράβο του γι’ αυτό… Εγώ το κάνω σαν ένα εφέ, σαν αντήχηση ή σαν delay και αυτό πέτυχε σ’ εμένα, αν ήξερα πως να το κάνω στο παρελθόν, θα το είχα κάνει περισσότερο… Βασικά, αν ακούγεται χάλια μπορείς αν το μισείς, αλλά δεν μπορείς να μου πεις ότι τα ρεφρέν μου ακούγονται χάλια, και ο κόσμος είναι χαζός, δεν το χρησιμοποίησα καν στο End Of The Days» με τον Vinnie, ο κόσμος όμως νόμιζε ότι το έκανα και με κριτίκαρε, εν τω μεταξύ εκείνοι αγάπησαν το Burn You Alive» στην AOTP δουλειά και αυτό έχει autotune καθόλη την διάρκεια!! Είναι θέμα προτιμήσεων και η τέχνη είναι είναι φτιαγμένη ώστε να αφήνει χώρο για την ερμηνεία, σαν το φαγητό, την ζωγραφική κτλ. Δεν μπορείς πάντα να ικανοποιείς τους πάντες, εγώ πρέπει να ικανοποιήσω τον εαυτό μου.

BT: Ποια είναι τα σχέδια σου για το μέλλον;
BMc: Θα κάνω άλλο ένα solo album μετά από το «4 Walls» και μετά θα είμαι αυστηρά μόνο executive, τραγουδιστής και στιχουργός. Αυτή τη στιγμή δουλεύω σε ένα τραγουδιστά φωνητικά με την ελπίδα να υπογράψω μία συμφωνία δημοσίευσης για να γράφω κομμάτια για τον κόσμο. Ο γιος μου ο Lego είναι το κύριο θέμα μου τώρα, αυτός και η Fresh Jones. Σε αυτούς θα είμαι συγκεντρωμένος από δω και πέρα, εγώ είδα τον κόσμο, αρκετά λεφτά και δουλεύω με τα είδωλα μου αυτή τη στιγμή, έτσι δεν μπορώ να παραπονεθώ, έφτασα τους περισσότερους στόχους μου, και έτσι θα παραδώσω τα σκήπτρα μου το 2012.

BT: Και μια τελευταία ερώτηση… Σκέφτεσαι να έρθεις live εδώ στην Ελλάδα;
BMc: Ναι, προσδοκώ άλλη μία Euro Tour το 2011, το Hip-Hop Kemp είναι τον Αύγουστο, αλλά σίγουρα, δεν κατάφερα να πάω στην Ελλάδα και στην Ιταλία αυτή την χρονιά, αλλά σίγουρα σκοπεύω να πάω την επόμενη χρονιά!! Δεν υπάρχει εκεί πέρα ένα τρελό party-νησί πέρα από την ακτή της Ελλάδας, εκεί θέλω να πάω με την οικογένεια, την γυναίκα μου και εγώ θα εγκατασταθώ εκεί και θα διώξω όλες τις γυναίκες σας (γέλια) . Επίσης, μετέφερε τις ευχαριστίες μου στους αναγνώστες σας που με στήριξαν και επιθυμούσαν να γίνει αυτή η συνέντευξη. Beat-Town: First of all, please introduce us yourself. Over the last years we have been hearing your name even more often.
ΒMc: My name is Block Mccloud, founder of Brooklyn ACACDEMY And Suicide Squad, and Member of AOTP. I been in the game forever it seems but it wasnt until recently that i decided to step out of the background and become a solo artist.

BT: What are you currently working on?
ΒMc:Wow, lol, too much it seems, im currently finishing my next Full length LP, Four Walls, produced entirely by DJ Waxwork, formerly of Snowgoons.. Honestly my best work to date, features include, ILL BIll, Vinnie Paz, Reef The lost Cauze, King Mag, Celph Titled, RA the Rugged Man, Demunz the Dark Apostle and many more, also doing a production compilation, produced by me, my dude Genetics and Phil Hamonic, featuring all the up and coming MC’s in the underground from all over the world, i wanted to give back to the underground for supporting me so im recording this album to promote them over our beats, like a Lyricist Lounge 2012, its called DNA (Drugs and Alcohol Vol.1) ., I am now engineering for Method Man, Ghostface and Raekwon, i manage Ghosts and my studio in Staten Island, also recording three incredible albums for SonGod (ghostface son), SICMIN- Dark Black Hell Night( DR.AMA, Blakstarr, Hellfire, and Night Time), and a new group called MAD HOUSE all out of Staten Island. BT: Any rapper or hip hop culture figure you admire?
ΒMc:Obviously Wutang is right at the top and Army of the Pharaohs, i think they are cloest to what i try to embody in my music, Pun and Eminem, basically anything where Lyrics are the dominant factor, and originality..

BT: Do you remember your first interraction with hip hop music?.
ΒMc: Im about to show my age here lol, but yes, i remember whatching a news report on tv about this new phenominon called hip hop and they were referring to a song called “The Message ” by Grand Master Flash, they showed the video and were critiqueing the realness of the lyrics.. then i heard Sugarhill Gang and White lines and it was a rap, i was hooked!

BT: Did you have any hard times during your carreer?
ΒMc: I was homeless twice in my life, as recently as four years ago when me and Fresh decided to say FTW and got together, but despite my real life trials and tribulations, hip hop has always been good to me and helped me get through them.. now i have a full fledged studio, label, career, and more contacts than i know what to do with, not to mention four beautiful kids, a beautiful wife and a huge loft in Staten island.. that number FOUR is very symbolic in my life right now..

BT: Being an underground rapper did you ever feel that your works did not get much attention as they deserved?
ΒΜc: I did feel that way until recently, its pretty amazing and inspiring the amount of love and support that i got from MC’s like RA and Celph Titled, Vinnie and Bill, and the mutual respect they had for me going into these projects. I guess i really didnt know the impact i had on the game until now, so in a lot of ways i feel satisfied that i accomplished my goal which was to change the game, affect it in some way, and be remembered for the music ive done. Im not done yet though.. so keep listening!

BT: Do you see any changes in the hip hop “game” over the last 3 years?
ΒMc: Man do i, the biggest change is no one is selling records, outside of the usual suspects Young Money and The ROC, and R&B, aint no one eating right, digital downloads will continue to grow i suspect, people are bootlegging and ripping everything because they are too broke to pay thanx to Bush, Obama, and the rest of them Skull n Bones motherfuckers… so yeah, things are bad, although i cant complain, ive managed to excel while others are on a steady decline..

BT:What’s in your opinion, the greatest lines you ever wrote?
ΒMc: I cant call it man, they are all like my babies n shit, but on the upcoming Four Walls, i did a song called “Last Will” With my wife that i enjoy, where i wrote:

BT: Do you feel proud to be a member of AOTP,a group that features the most popular underground rappers in the U.S.?
ΒMc: I definately am proud to be a part of that collective. ive been working with Vinnie for many years so i always felt like i was down, but it was certainly a great day when he made it official and announced it to the world.. I admire that whole movement, how they move as one, and im happy to be contributing to all there successes…and having them contribute to mine.. im honored.

BT: Any rappers or producers that you are willing to work or collaborate with in the future?
ΒMc:I look forward to moving backward.. working with Kool G rap, Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, i want to do more stuff with Marco Polo and Ill Mind.. people i anticipate working with in the next few months are B real, Tech Nine, Immortal Technique, M1, Inspectah Deck, Gizer, i plan on staying busy lol..

BT: What’s your favorite “mainstream” rapper?
ΒMc: I may lose a few fans but right now im liking that whole Young Money Movement.. Drake is killing it with the singing and rapping and although he might be getting over saturated in the market, his approach is different than what weve been getting fed for the last 5 years and thats refreshing, the industry needs to do that more, switch it up already, im tired of “ignorant rap”, we need substance in our lives, and thats what me and my people are bringing.

BT:Your opinion about autotune and electrohop invasion in hip hop culture?
ΒMc: I love it, i dont see why underground kids get caaught up in the “hater” hype, they attach an effect to “mainstream” and all of a sudden its wrong to use it or your selling out, if we look back at the Funk era. Geroge CLinton, Bootsy Collins, then later with Black Street, and Prince even, they used that effect long before T-pain and people loved it, T Pain made it popular again and Kudos to him for that… i do it as an effect just like a reverb or delay and its worked for me, if id known how to do it in the past i would have done it more.. basically if it sounds wack hate it, but you cant tell me my hooks sound bad, and people are dumb, i didnt even use it on “End of Days” with Vinnie and people think i did and critisize, meanwhile they love “Burn You ALive” on the AOTP joint and that has AutoTune all over it!! Its a matter of preference and art is meant to be left open to interpretation, like food, paintings etc..you cant please everyone all the time, i aim to please me.

BT: What are your plans for the future?
ΒMc:Im doing one more solo after Four Walls, then im strictly Executive, SInger Songwriter. Im currently working on a singing album in the hopes of landing a publishing deal to write songs for people. My Son Lego is my main concern now, him and Fresh Jones.. they will be my main focus from now on, ive seen the world, made decent money, and im working with my idols right now, so i cant complain, ive acheived most of my goals, im passing the baton in 2012.

BT: And one last thing, are you thinking of coming live here in Greece?
ΒMc: Yes, i anticipate another Euro Tour in 2011, hip hop kemp this August, but Definately, i didnt get to go to Greece or Italy this year, so i will be aiming to get out there next year for sure!!! Isnt there some crazy party island off the coast of greece, thats where i want to be fam, wifey and i will turn all your woman out lol!! also give my thanx to all of your readers who have supported me and asked for this interview to happen, if not for you, i would have nothing, id still be homeless for real, so thank you, nothing but love for all of you..
